Sergey Balashov was born on July 20, 1996, in Moscow. He began his career in Saint Petersburg, playing for the youth teams of Spartak and Zenit. In 2016, Balashov moved to Krasnodar and spent two seasons in Lokomotiv-Kuban’s system, including a loan spell at Dynamo-MSTU from Maykop.
In the 2016/17 season, he was included in the top five of the VTB United Youth League, and the following year he won the Russian Cup with Lokomotiv-Kuban. In 2018, the center moved to Zenit and played for the team for three seasons, making his debut in the VTB United League with the St. Petersburg club. In summer 2020, Sergey signed with Yenisey from Krasnoyarsk.
In the past season, Balashov played in 43 VTB United League games, averaging 8.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.
